How to make a Meta ad that brings in local customers

A plain-English guide for small service businesses: the offer, the image, the words and the first week of running your ad.

Most local businesses that try Facebook and Instagram ads give up after a few weeks. Usually the problem isn't the platform. It's the ad itself: a vague message, a stock photo, and no clear next step.

Here's a simple way to make an ad your future customers will actually stop for.

1. Lead with one clear offer

Your ad has about one second to earn attention. Pick one thing you want people to do and make it easy to say yes:

If you can't say the offer in one short sentence, it's too complicated for an ad.

2. Show your real work or a real situation

People scroll past anything that looks like a generic stock photo. A real job, a real result, a real team member, or a realistic scene of the problem you solve does far better. If you don't have photos, an AI-designed image of a realistic scene for your business is a strong starting point.

3. Put the promise on the image

Most people never read the text above an ad. Put a short headline (five to seven words) right on the image, plus a button-style call to action like "Book now" or "Get a free quote".

4. Write the primary text like a person

Keep it to two or three sentences:

  1. The problem your customer has
  2. How you solve it
  3. What to do next

Skip the hype. Never promise results you can't guarantee. Meta reviews ads, and so do your customers.

5. Make several versions, not one

The fastest way to find what works is to test a few different angles at the same time. For example:

Run them side by side for a few days with the same budget, then keep the ones that bring in leads at the lowest cost.

6. Answer fast

An ad only creates the lead. What you do in the next few minutes decides whether it turns into a customer. Set up an instant reply by text or email so every new lead hears from you right away, even when you're on a job.
